The ultimate "Teach yourself how to crochet" resource list

So I've decided that I'm going to go ahead and put together a crochet along! To give some of you newbies a head start, this post's for you :) To see what supplies you'll need, see the very bottom, but then come right back here to the top and get your learn on!

Over the last few months of my obsessive crocheting explosion, I've gathered a huge list of links and favorite videos on YouTube that have helped me teach myself how to crochet. Because of those videos and links, I've been able to create fun crochet projects and post them here. And so many of you have left lovely comments on my work saying you wish you could crochet too. Well guess what? Now you don't have a reason not to learn! HAHA! I've gathered the best resources I could find on teaching yourself how to crochet and have listed them all below in one spot for you to refer to. So bookmark this page and put aside a few minutes each day to finally teach yourself.

I've been considering doing my own video tutorials, but my camera doesn't have auto focus for close ups and there's plenty of videos already made so this is the next best thing! Perhaps after Christmas if Santa brings me a video camera with super optical zoom, I'll make my own...

These are all videos or links that I found to be the most helpful for their quality and ease to understand. There's more than one way to do certain things (like slip knots, magic rings, etc), but these are the ones that worked successfully for me.
Let's start with the basics, shall we?
Yarns
Hooks
Crochet tools
How to make a slip knot
How to hold yarn while crocheting
Using stitch markers
Crochet terms: US vs UK
Stitch abbreviations chart - for reading patterns
How to read a yarn label

Basic crochet stitches (and abbreviations)
Chain stitch (ch)
Single crochet stitch (sc)
Double crochet stitch (dc)
Half double crochet stitch (hdc)
Slip stitch (sl st)
Finishing off (fo)
Increasing - making project bigger by putting at least 2 stitches in 1 stitch (inc).
Decreasing - (same video) making project smaller by making at least 2 stitches turn into 1 stitch (dec).

Getting a little more comfortable

Crocheting in the round
- Shows 2 ways to start: with a chain (for open hole in middle - decorative motifs) or magic ring (for closed hole in middle - amigurumi).
- Also shows how to use a stitch marker.

Other shapes

Reading patterns - I still struggle with this sometimes.

Reading a crochet pattern -using words.
Reading a crochet chart - if you are more of a visual person and prefer to see symbols instead of words. Also good if the pattern is in another language and they provide this chart you'll be able to still read it.

The best of the best - My all time favorite learning resources
Crafty Minx - Crochet School
A great resource with high quality videos for total newbie beginners or if you'd like to touch up on your skills. Plus, just the name Crochet School is totally adorable.

Mikeyssmail YouTube channel
This guy is great! Anytime I searched YouTube for a tutorial, I always found one of his videos in the search results.

Hectanooga's YouTube channel
She makes it look so easy (because it is!) and she explains what she's doing really well.

Crochet Geek's YouTube channel
She has visually clear video tutorials for learning the basics (I linked to some of her videos in the basic stitches section above) and also for some patterns.

Planet June
Once you get comfortable with crocheting and reading patterns, June creates and sells the cutest amigurumi patterns in her shop and has a few crochet tutorials specific to amigurumi over there too. She is really helpful if you need to reach out to her for help.

**Attention newbies who are interested in joining my crochet along**
I'll be posting later this week with more details, but for now here's a list of supplies you'll need before you can start (I'm planning on starting the first project October 1st):

-Hooks (It's easier to learn with bigger hooks, but I'd recommend buying a set of hooks so you have a variety of sizes. The yarn you buy will have a recommended hook size for that particular yarn so look on the label. I use Boye aluminum hooks.)
-Yarn (I recommend a worsted weight acrylic yarn like Red Heart Super Saver. It's affordable and great to learn with and comes in lots of colors)
-Stitch markers
-Darning needle (a giant yarn needle)
-Scissors

----->Please note that it's important to know how to read a pattern. I provided a few resources in this list for you, plus here's some additional links: 1, 2, 3, 4 (video), but I won't be going through each project stitch by stitch. I'm assuming you know the basics, which can be learned from the videos and links in this list.

  3. With the cool weather floating in, I definitely need to pull out the hooks and needles again. I idiotically donated all of my yarn this summer ("I haven't knit in six months? Maybe I'm over it!" FACEPALM) but I need a big cozy infinity scarf *stat.*

Thanks for the informative post! Not just great for beginners, but old yarn fiends that are a bit rusty as well. ;)

  4. Awesome post.

I am a super newbie in that I only know the single chain stitch. I will no doubt spend loads of time at this post and when I have the 8 basic stitches down, I'll let you know & join in :)

    Thanks!
    Joanne

I know you posted this a while ago (I'm behind on my blog reading) but as a LEFT handed crochet newbie I couldn't have made it through without these video tutorials from Crochet Geek.
Something you might consider adding in a future crochet post!
