Video // Our cross country road trip: We survived!

Oh my goodness let me just say how glad I am that our drive is over! Driving 12 hours a day is brutal, let me tell you. Brian did most of the driving because I'd get really bad headaches after a few hours in and nothing over-the-counter works on the headaches I get (I think this is my way of showing car sickness?) and Monty does not do well in the car. Poor guy was shaking and panting and stress-yawning after 1 hour in. We'd take turns holding him in the front on our laps which would stop the worst of his shaking. I didn't want to sedate him. He didn't do that the entire ride, but most of the time he would. Mabel, however, did amazing! She basically slept and looked cute the entire time in her bed on the back seat. She wasn't even phased about the long drives.

Our route took us from California through Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and finally New York. I took videos of as many of the state lines as I could because I want to put together a road trip video. We drove around 12 hours a day because we had to make it to Michigan in time for Brian's Grandma's funeral on Saturday. It was a very nice service, and was very sad, but she lived a long and happy life. And I got to meet relatives from Brian's family that he hadn't even met yet. We stayed on his Great Aunt's huge farm for Easter dinner on Sunday and then we continued the rest of our trip.

It was a good trip overall. I bought my first audiobook for my Kindle (and probably my last as it was way too expensive) and we listened to it in the car. I didn't know you could do that but we have an mp3 jack already in there and it works great. Nothing happened to the car and we didn't get lost thanks to our GPS my parents got us for Christmas. The only bad thing that happened was when we were in Oklahoma, we didn't have change for the tolls; we had dollar bills. And the stupid tolls only take change and there were no people running the toll booths so guess what we ended up doing? Running 3 tolls. Each time setting off that alarm! One of those times was because we took an exit to look for a restaurant to break our bills, but there weren't any to be found so we had to get back on the turnpike and run the damn toll again. I guess I can might-should expect 3 tickets in the mail then.

So now we will be spending time with family in NY until Brian can land a transfer of his job to PA. Then we're hoping to start house hunting! It's about darn time! But it feels so good, and slightly weird, to be home with our car and dogs. The dogs met both sets of our parents as well as their cats. They are scared of the cats too which is hilarious because I thought Monty would want to eat them. Such big babies, but I'd rather it be this way than having the streets run red with kitty's blood.

So here's the video! I apologize for the bug guts seen through the windshield. We tried washing them off at the gas stations but they were seriously caked on there.

  14. Wow! Fun video. :) So where's your stuff, or were you just moving with what you could fit into your car? I'm surprised to see how flat the middle of the country is. Lol. I've grown up in Oregon and never been further East than Montana, so have usually been surrounded by hills and mountains everywhere I go!

  15. Damn, girl. Nice video! Glad you made it back to the east coast. I know the pull of going home once you turn 30, believe me (Oregon has been calling me hard core).

  18. For many states you can pay your missed toll fees online before they send you a ticket! I had to run some tolls in Illinois a couple years ago and was able to pay them right away!

  19. Loved this video! Looks like you guys had a great time. I might be doing the opposite trip next year, but we'll see! Did you move any of your other stuff? Or did you go back with just the things you had in your car?

  22. I've only just watched this video... Me and my bf got back from America on Thursday, after spending 18 days driving from Chicago to San Diego (with detours into Texas to see family and into Mammoth, so worked out the same kind of mileage...just spread out a bit more!)
I am missing the whole experience so much, and it was nice to watch your video of a lot of the roads that we drove on (just in the other direction)
makes me miss it more though!
Weird seeing things on the side of the road in your videos that we also saw and took photos of :)

wish I had done more videos like you have done! I have a few so could see what I can do with them.

Your dogs did so well. bless them.
