Synopsis from Goodreads:
Forty years after the destruction of civilization... Man is reduced to salvaging the ruins of a broken world. One man’s most prized possession is Hemingway’s Classic ‘The Old Man and the Sea.’ With the words of the novel echoing across the wasteland, a survivor of the Nuclear Holocaust journeys into the unknown to break a curse. What follows is an incredible tale of survival and endurance. One man must survive the desert wilderness and mankind gone savage to discover the truth of Hemingway’s classic tale of man versus nature. Part Hemingway, part Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, a suspenseful odyssey into the dark heart of the Post-Apocalyptic American southwest. A book lover’s action flick.
I LOVED this read! It's a .99 e-book from Amazon and a short story of only 125 pages. I honestly don't know why I didn't give it 5 stars. I'm just keeping the rating I gave it right after I finished but the more I think about it, the more I like it. If you like dystopian reads, I'm confident you will enjoy this story. I finished it back in November and I still think about it and recommend it anytime people ask for book suggestions. It really makes you think and it leaves you feeling hopeful. It's short, but has depth. It follows the Old Man as he scavenges through the wasteland for things to bring back to his community. It's considered bad luck to come back empty handed so he goes farther and farther into the wasteland in the hopes of finding something.
And you wanna know what makes it even cooler? After I gave my rating on Goodreads (which I set up to automatically post to twitter), the writer tweeted @ me...

Whaaaaa!? That made me feel special :)

8 hellos:
It actually sounds REALLY interesting! I'm sort of thinking about getting a kindle, just for books like this that are pretty inexpensive.
I'm adding this to my booklist!
This is a great feature. Please keep them coming. I am always looking for great books to read. Thanks so much!
Awesome, might need to check that out, and always love recommendations!
I'm not surprised that the author saw it--I have a friend who works at Harlequin, and she says some of their authors crazily scour Goodreads for reviews and get into fights with people who give their books bad ratings, lol.
Sounds intriguing. And how cool that the author tweeted you!
Oh wow. That is going on my list right now! I'm currently reading 'Everything is Illuminated'... I'm quite behind on that bandwagon, I know. But I'm really enjoying it so far!

How neat! I'm totally putting this on my to read list! And am probably sending you a friend invite on ye ole GoodReads.... :)
SO neat that the writer wrote back to you! Love it. And I've never heard of this book, I will have to check it out.
I used to read a lot... LOT. Then I had a kid and it all went downhill. I'm loving my little boy, but I do look forward to being able to read again. Oh, and I'm tagging you. No pressure: http://www.bittybird.net/2012/01/i-was-tagged-meme.html
